FAQ

Apostille & Document Legalisation in Australia

1. What is an Apostille?

An Apostille is a certificate that authenticates the origin of a public document. It is issued by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) in Australia and is used when presenting documents in countries that are part of the Hague Apostille Convention.

2. What is the difference between an Apostille and Authentication?

An Apostille is used for countries that are members of the Hague Convention. Authentication is required for countries that are not part of the convention. After authentication, documents often require further legalisation from the foreign embassy or consulate.

3. Which documents can be apostilled or authenticated?

Common documents include:

  • Birth, marriage, and death certificates
  • Police clearance certificates
  • Academic transcripts and degrees
  • Powers of attorney
  • Notarised copies of passports and IDs

If you have a specific request or are unsure whether your documents can be apostilled or authenticated, please contact us.

4. Can photocopies be apostilled?

No. Apostilles can only be issued on original, undamaged documents or notarised copies certified by an Australian Notary Public. In some cases, a digitally issued certificate may be accepted. For more details, see our blog.

5. How long does the process take?

Standard processing can take 7 to 13 business days, depending on DFAT’s workload and document type. Express or urgent services may be available upon request for an additional fees.

6. Do you offer Australia-wide services?

Absolutely! We help clients from every corner of Australia—whether you’re in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, or anywhere else. Simply post your documents to us, and we’ll take care of the rest.

7. I’m currently living overseas. Can you still help me get an Apostille on my Australian document?

Yes. We regularly assist clients living outside Australia who need their Australian documents legalised. You can courier or post your documents to our office, but please contact us for confirmation before sending. Once completed, your documents will be securely returned to you via courier.

8. Can you assist with Embassy or Consulate legalization after authentication?

Yes. For countries that require additional legalisation by an embassy or consulate, we can assist with this process once the authentication has been completed.

9. Can you advise on the certificate accepted by a foreign country?

We are unable to specify the exact requirements for each country, as it is determined by the receiving country’s regulations. We recommend reaching out directly to the relevant foreign authority or embassy to confirm their specific requirements for document certification.

10. Is your service recognised by DFAT?

We facilitate the submission of your documents to DFAT for Apostille and authentication services, providing guidance throughout the process. All Apostilles and authentications are issued directly by DFAT.
